LOVE AND MARRIAGE
Marriage is the legally or formally recognized union of two individuals as partners in a personal relationship, historically and in some jurisdictions, specifically a union between a man and a woman. This discussion will focus on the union between a man and a woman. The documentation status of the union may be a point of inquiry, but it does not alter the fundamental nature of the relationship or its outcome. A successful marriage should be characterized by love, respect, honesty, and other essential qualities, including the inevitability of quarrels, jealousy, and ups and downs. In some instances, partners may have the opportunity to recognize and appreciate each other’s strengths and weaknesses prior to marriage, enabling them to work on building a solid foundation for their relationship. This period of discovery and growth is crucial in establishing a strong and lasting union.
What about the practice of arranged marriages, prevalent in certain countries and cultures, which may or may not be formally documented? These unions may be motivated by financial considerations or other factors. In such cases, the individuals involved may not have previously met or interacted with each other, yet they are expected to embark on a lifelong journey together. Is this a fair expectation? They will need to invest time and effort in getting to know each other, and it is possible that they may not be compatible. Assuming they spend years trying to understand, adapt, and ultimately develop feelings for each other, what then? Will they have reached the culmination of their life’s journey? How much time will they have left to enjoy their union? Marriage can be likened to a vessel navigating the open sea, with no land in sight. It is essential for the partners to chart their own course towards happiness.
